P2P Financial Systems International Workshop 2018 (P2PFISY)
The University College London Centre for Blockchain Technologies (UCL CBT) is proud to announce the upcoming P2P Financial Systems International Workshop 2018 (P2PFISY), to be held at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, in Cleveland, Ohio, on 26-27 July 2018.
The event features a diverse line-up of speakers who will bridge the gaps between academia, industry, and finance and advance the debate on the possibilities and controversies of financial disintermediation. “Blockchain and distributed ledger technologies represent a complex challenge for central banks, unique in our history, in that they do not necessarily require a central role for classical banks, and yet, they are central to what banks do. This conference provides a forum where academics (of many disciplines), practitioners, and regulators may present and discuss their cutting-edge research and experience,” said Ben Craig, Senior Economic Advisor at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland.
“The two-day workshop will build on last year’s theme of P2P and blockchain with a focus this year on central bank digital currencies,” said Thamim Ahmed, Program Manager for P2PFISY. Topics will include digital currencies and blockchain technologies, P2P lending and crowdfunding, digital money transfer, regulations, and the benefits that distributed ledger technology offers beyond currency. Keynote speakers include Gary Gensler (MIT Sloan School of Management, and ex-chairman of the CFTC), Alexander Liptop (Co-Founder of Sila Money and ex-head of Quants at Bank of America) and Katrin Assenmacher (Head of Monetary Policy Strategy at the European Central Bank).
Each day of the workshop will conclude with a rich panel session, featuring analysis of business, regulation, and the technology of P2P financial markets. The panel sessions will address questions such as: How do central banks remain innovative? How will technological developments like fintech and digital money shape the future financial system? What opportunities and potential risks do such peer-to-peer innovations involve? Does regulation meet the (global) demands of the pace of development?
A highlight of the conference will be Robleh Ali’s (MIT Digital Currency Initiative, ex-lead of digital currencies at the Bank of England) presentation of the findings from his paper on ‘Cellular structure for a digital fiat currency.’ A discussion with Stanley Yong (CTO and Global Central Bank Digital Currency Lead at IBM) will follow, which will highlight the work on Project Ubin in Singapore.
During the two-day workshop, participants from over 35 countries consisting of researchers, industry experts and entrepreneurs will be engaged in timely presentations and debates. “P2PFISY is recognised globally as an annual high-level meeting, where research-led views and innovative insights on how the P2P revolution is reshaping both the financial sector and the financial services eco-system are shared” said Paolo Tasca, Executive Director of the UCL Centre for Blockchain Technologies.
