Ellis joins directly from British bank Barclays, where he has worked for the last 10 years, most recently as managing director and chief information officer of next generation consumer banking.
In this role, he notably led the delivery of a core banking platform and adjoining digital products, including the launch of a co-branded credit card with Amazon in August last year.
Prior to joining Barclays in 2015, Ellis served as programme director for the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), and as a programme manager for Lloyds Banking Group.
His new employer is one of the largest mutual life, pensions and investment companies in the UK, and currently holds around 8.5 million life and pension policies. Royal London also offers long-term savings, protection and asset management services, with £169 billion in assets under management.
Announcing his appointment via LinkedIn this week, Ellis states that he will now work to “simplify, enhance, and innovate across [Royal London’s] digital platforms”, which currently enable customers to manage and access information regarding their plans from a mobile app.
Ellis’ appointment almost exactly a year after Royal London hired Peter Josse, also former Barclays, as its group COO.
